National Hindu Students Forum (UK) [NHSF], is the largest organisation in UK and mainland Europe that represents the views of young British Hindus. As a non-profit voluntary organisation, NHSF have over 30 active chapters in universities across the UK.
Sewa which translates to selfless service is an integral part of Hindu dharma. For this reason, NHSF provides a platform for Hindu students to undertake and manage a variety of charity projects. Currently, Hindu students across Britain are launching an emergency appeal to raise funds for victims of the Haiti earthquake.
Birmingham City University Hindu Society is holding a fundraising event called Candyland. There will be stalls, games and activities as well as a special performance from the universitys Bhangra Society. As a fun alternative to normal fundraising activities, Hindu students at City University London are having a Paratha (popular Indian flatbread) eating competition! In the North, students of Liverpool University Hindu Society are soon to hold a mini mela, Momentum, with many activities planned, Indian refreshments and a DJ.
These are only a few of the many fundraisers organised by Hindu students across the country and are in addition to regular Sewa events universities undertake weekly.
All money raised during these events will be going to The Lotus Trust, an international charity and part of the welfare arm of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). They are working with the UK Hindu community to assist with the huge relief effort that is required. The Lotus Trust has raised over £40,000 so far for the Haiti appeal. It has partnered with Global Food for Life who will be co-ordinating food and water relief activities from a dedicated Haiti relief base station.
From Monday 1st March 2010, NHSF are launching their annual Sewa Week where students undertake a whole week of activities dedicated to charity and selfless service.
