In Hindu Dharma we are taught the story of Lord Rama and his search of Sitama, he did not concede that she was lost for good instead he vowed to search the entire Kingdom for her and not to rest until he found her. Rama Bhagwan did not give up and eventually he found Sitama. From this simple parable we are taught that when the going gets tough to keep on going and or not to take the easy option and concede defeat. Instead we must persevere, work hard and eventually the fruits of our labour will bloom. We are further taught through scriptures such as the Mahabharata that truth is an eternal duty. One should reverentially bow unto truth for it is the highest refuge. Truth is the eternal Brahman and everything rests upon Truth, hence telling the truth becomes installed in us consciously or subconsciously.<\/p>\n

The role of the Law in society is to ensure that truth prevails. Society dictates what it believes not to be acceptable behaviour and the courts ensure that these standards are met. As a law student I am often asked \u2018how can you possibly represent someone who is guilty?\u2019 the answer to me is fairly simple, if I have faith in the Legal system to uphold justice and come to the correct conclusion i.e. to find the truth then I am merely fulfilling a formality in representing the \u2018guilty\u2019 party and ensuring that a further injustice is not done to them. So having faith in the Law is very important in order to be deemed a good Hindu.<\/p>\n

David Cameron in the run up to his election campaign highlighted some of the many attributes that Hindus have brought to the UK. He stated \u201cIt’s hardly surprising that British Hindus have been such a successful part of our nation. After all, the values you brought with you when you arrived here are those traditionally associated with Britain: tolerance, honesty, enterprise, and respect for the law. \u201c<\/p>\n

Why do Hindus have such respect for the Law? Well it could be due to the guidance given to us by the scriptures or our faith in the law. Personally, I believe this respect stems from our up bringing in a Hindu household. From a young age we are taught to respect our elders, to respect the deities and to respect all material items. This respect then transfers into respecting others opinions, respecting oneself and respecting the Law.<\/p>\n

Whatever you believe the reason to be doesn\u2019t matter, just recall the well known fact that Hindus make up the smallest percentage of prisoners in the UK.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
