We were greeted by Amanda and a group of senior volunteers who dedicate their time on a regular basis to preserve the reserve.

Once briefed the committee got stuck into activities such as ditch digging, shrub clearance and willow picking. The enthusiasm and dedication shown by the NatCom members was astounding, everyone was so engrossed in their tasks that they forgot to take a break. This just shows that for a good cause people are willing to sacrifice anything, which in essence is one of the main drivers of sewa.

In the few hours, the team had helped dig a ditch for a stream to run through it, built a fence using all natural resources and helped clear bramble and other litter to ensure that the natural beauty of the reserve was restored. The senior volunteers were so happy with the work that the members had done that they invited us again to volunteer anytime.

Amanda and the other senior volunteers were such an inspiration, as they give up their time every week to come and improve the reserve, so that it can still be used as a local attraction. The dedication they demonstrated instilled in us the passion to continue to give our time to parks and reserves around our local area.

Sewa can take place in any shape or form, and through the NatCom Sewa activity we demonstrated this by helping to preserve the world around us, and ensuring that we express all efforts to protect our surroundings and restore it’s natural beauty.

By Neil Kundu NHSF Sewa Team Co-ordinator It’s the morning of the 19th February 2012, and after a very successful yet tiresome National Sports Competition a few members of the committee ventured on to the Kings Norton Local Nature Reserve for the annual NatCom Sewa activity.
