In some parts of India it is a nine-day festival, coinciding with the Vasanta Navratri, and many people fast over this period.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.3em;\">Glory of Shree Rama<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Shree Rama is the 7<sup>th<\/sup> incarnation of Lord Vishnu, into the <i>Ikshvaaku<\/i> lineage of King <i>Dasharath<\/i> of Ayodhya. <i>Shree Rama<\/i> is known as <i>Maryaada Purushottama<\/i>, <i>the perfect man or Lord of Self-Control, <\/i>as his life exemplifies the ideal son, ideal brother, ideal husband and ideal ruler. <i>Shree Rama<\/i>\u2019s incarnation was to restore <i>Dharma<\/i> on Earth by destroying the evil King of <i>Lanka, Ravana.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Shree Rama<\/i>\u2019s journey is one of perfect adherence to <i>Dharma<\/i>, even through difficult situations in life. Seen as a truly devoted renunciant, <i>Rama<\/i> abandons his claim to the throne for his father\u2019s honour, and serves a 14 year exile in the forest. Unable to bear separation, his wife <i>Sita<\/i> and brother <i>Lakshman<\/i> both join Rama in his exile.<\/p>\n<p>Many events occur throughout their time in exile, but the most important being the kidnapping of his wife <i>Sita<\/i> by <i>Ravana<\/i>. This leads to a colossal war against <i>Ravana a<\/i>fter a long and painful search. The battle tests <i>Shree Rama\u2019s <\/i>personal strength and virtue, but he eventually slays <i>Ravana<\/i> and liberates Sita.<\/p>\n<p>Upon completing his exile, Rama returns to <i>Ayodhya<\/i> (the capital of his Kingdom and birthplace) and eventually becomes emperor, under a reign famously termed Rama<i> Rajya<\/i> \u2013 eleven thousand years of perfect happiness, peace, prosperity and justice. <i>Rama<\/i>\u2019s presence and strict following of dharma attracted powerful devotees such as <i>Hanuman<\/i> and the <i>vanaras of Kishkinda<\/i>, whom helped Rama rescue Sita. Rama is revered for his endless compassion, courage and devotion to dharmic values and duty.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2578\" src=\"http:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Ram-Navmi1-223x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ram Navmi1\" width=\"223\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Ram-Navmi1-223x300.jpg 223w, https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Ram-Navmi1-64x86.jpg 64w, https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/Ram-Navmi1.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Ritual &amp; Celebration<\/h2>\n<p>Celebrations of <i>Ramnavmi <\/i>are marked by <i>Akhand<\/i> <i>Paath <\/i>(continuous recital) of the<i> Ramcharitmanas<\/i>, <i>bhajans<\/i> and <i>kirtans<\/i>. Images of Rama are placed on cradles and rocked by devotees. As Rama was born at noon, <i>Mandirs<\/i> are elaborately decorated and <i>Aarti <\/i>is performed. Many devotees uphold a <i>Vrata<\/i> (fasting) on this day and feast in the evening.<\/p>\n<p><i>Ayodhya<\/i>, the birthplace of Rama, is a focus for great celebration.
