Husti<\/span> was brought to <\/span>life<\/span> in August 2014<\/span>; its inception stemmed from a range of influences, in which NHSF<\/span> (UK)<\/span> played a strong part. <\/span><\/p>\n

Priyam<\/span> and I have been friends right from the very beginning, since our early days attending <\/span>Priory Preparatory School in Banstead<\/span>. It was here, <\/span>through our exposure to various fundraising events<\/span>, be it<\/span> mufti day<\/span>s<\/span> or <\/span>bake<\/span> sales, that <\/span>we were instilled <\/span>with the basic human principle of helping others less fortunate than ourselves. <\/span>This <\/span>developed further as we grew older and started to better <\/span>understand life outside <\/span>of our bubbles. <\/span><\/p>\n

We moved<\/span> away from <\/span>mufti days in school<\/span> towards charitable walks\/runs <\/span>(a real struggle considering our undisclosed BMIs). We visited poverty-stricken countries as volunteer<\/span>s, looking to make a difference, l<\/span>ooking to have a real impact. <\/span>It was<\/span> by<\/span> spending time in<\/span> slums, orphanages and hospitals in<\/span> <\/span>India <\/span>and <\/span>Zambia<\/span> <\/span>that our eyes were opened to <\/span>the<\/span> in-field<\/span> fight against <\/span>poverty. The sheer scale of need was overwhelming. <\/span><\/p>\n

We became <\/span>leaders<\/span> of our respective Hindu Societies<\/span> <\/span>(NHSF Chapter) <\/span>and built the connectio<\/span>ns required to start a movement <\/span>against indifference. Indifference was one reason (amongst others as I\u2019m sure you are aware) which explained low turnouts and poor engagement. To start a movement, we <\/span>had<\/span> to start with <\/span>\u2018<\/span>why<\/span>?\u2019<\/span> We applied this principle in <\/span>our NHSF Chapters<\/span> and i<\/span>t was through <\/span>these<\/span> experiences that we <\/span>learnt<\/span> that<\/span> NHSF (UK) <\/span>recognises<\/span> that Hindu Students have<\/span> the potential to change<\/span> the outlook of society and use<\/span> this principle to scale nationally. <\/span><\/p>\n

It was inspiring to learn<\/span> <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>NHSF <\/span>(UK) <\/span>journey<\/span> and <\/span>its <\/span>25 <\/span>years of<\/span> <\/span>history. <\/span>Events such as <\/span>Sewa<\/span> <\/span>Week<\/span>, Dharma Fest, v<\/span>arious sports competitions and Z<\/span>onal <\/span>Garba<\/span>, <\/span>highlighted<\/span> the impact <\/span>of the collaborative ethos<\/span> that<\/span> <\/span>NHSF<\/span> (UK)<\/span> <\/span>pragmatically <\/span>harbours<\/span>. T<\/span>hrough such events, they are able to bring unity between students <\/span>of the past, present an<\/span>d future. <\/span><\/p>\n

In August 2014, <\/span>Priyam<\/span> and I launched <\/span>Husti<\/span>. <\/span>It was <\/span>born<\/span> in<\/span> <\/span>response to the growing levels of inequality across India and a paucity of hi<\/span>gh quality interventions. With 1\/3<\/span>rd<\/span> of global poverty concentrated in India, the scale of need was apparent. <\/span><\/p>\n

E<\/span>ducation is the greatest <\/span>equalis<\/span>er<\/span>. The success of the Indian diaspora can, to some extent, be attributed to principles of hard work, courage and entrepreneurial spirit. The roots of generational success can often be <\/span>localised<\/span> in a strong sense of educational priority. Hindu Societies across the country are brimming with some of the smartest minds and sharpest tongues in the country. This is no coincidence. <\/span><\/p>\n

E<\/span>ducation is the greatest <\/span>equalis<\/span>er<\/span>. <\/span>We<\/span> have a<\/span> share<\/span>d<\/span> <\/span>history<\/span> <\/span>of <\/span>grandparents arriving from various Afr<\/span>ican c<\/span>ountries or India itself, living in dire conditions and suffering the consequences of institutional <\/span>prejudice. From this<\/span>,<\/span> we inherit an indomitable drive and a deep appreciation of education. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Problem<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In many pre-existing establishments, education is not of high enough quality to retain, inspire <\/span>and motivate children. This is complicated by multiple layers of other issues such as hunger, finances, transport, all of which can act as barriers to attending school.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Solution<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

We strive to improve the quality of education that India’s poorest students receive. We conduct research and then design programmes that will improve each and every child’s individual holistic education, quality of life and employability. <\/span><\/p>\n

The first year<\/span> of <\/span>Husti<\/span> proved to be harder than anticipated, but through the suppo<\/span>rt of friends and families and NHSF Chapters<\/span>, we were able<\/span> to grow and make our voice heard<\/span>.<\/span> <\/span>We were fortunate enough to be invited to events<\/span>,<\/span> such as the \u2018VKPA Dinner and Dance,\u2019 the \u2018Maharaja Ball,\u2019 <\/span>and <\/span>\u2018Su<\/span>tton High Schools Charity Week\u2019. We were very grateful to win a few awards on the way!<\/span><\/p>\n

These<\/span> events greatly aided our online presence and contributed financially towards our projects<\/span>. <\/span>Together with Priory School, we were able to put together their first Bollywood Night, a night that was filled with great success and one that strengthened the partnership with the school. Along with this, we <\/span>have <\/span>held <\/span>multiple other <\/span>Curr<\/span>y Night<\/span>s<\/span> and Handbag Sales. <\/span><\/p>\n

We acquired the support of 10 high street stores, which were willing to place our collec<\/span>tion boxes near their counters<\/span>. O<\/span>ne of<\/span> our boxes was briefly seen <\/span>on the TV show <\/span>\u2018The Boy <\/strong><\/span>In<\/span> the Dress<\/span>\u2019 on<\/span> <\/span>BBC1<\/span><\/strong>!<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n

February 2015, <\/span>Husti<\/span> had turned 6 months old and we launched the <\/span>\u2018<\/span>elephoto<\/span>,\u2019campaign <\/span>where we asked everyone to photograph our <\/span>Husti<\/span> elephant<\/span>, donate \u00a31 and pass it on. The campaign raised \u00a3500, and all was used to fund the <\/span>Tukni<\/span> Ki <\/span>Shaadi<\/span> <\/span>The<\/span> Child Marriage Educational Video (in production). <\/span><\/p>\n

Momentum was picking up<\/span> and it brought us to the <\/span>milestone<\/span> we had been <\/span>working<\/span> tirelessly <\/span>for; <\/span>we were able to apply to become a registered charity with the UK <\/span>C<\/span>harity<\/span> C<\/span>ommission. <\/span>After months, of what <\/span>had <\/span>felt like endless paperwork and exchange of emails, on the 14<\/span>th<\/span> January 2016, <\/span>Husti<\/span> became a<\/span> registered charity (1165161). <\/span>For us, this meant the beginning of another exciting chapter <\/span>of <\/span>Husti<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n

W<\/span>e have<\/span> also<\/span> supported a number of projects through working with local <\/span>in-field <\/span>partners (<\/span>Prot<\/span>asahan<\/span> and Don Bosco) to <\/span>maximis<\/span>e<\/span> our impact in the field;<\/span><\/p>\n

Our Mission Statement;<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

\u2018<\/span>Husti<\/span> is a charity working to relieve poverty in India by funding and developing high impact local projects to empower the poorest.\u2019<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Looking ahead toward<\/span>s<\/span> the end of 2016, into 2017 and beyond, we have decided to tackle a larger project, one that <\/span>we\u2019re<\/span> rather excited about, namely the \u2018<\/span>Sathod<\/span> School Development Project.\u2019<\/span>

This project will take up to 2 years to complete, but will effect 150+ children. <\/span>
By way of a brief background, the school was established in 1966 and for 33 years it has struggled to provide even the most basic education facilities for its 100+ <\/span>students. In 1999, Mr<\/span>.<\/span> Sanjay <\/span>Bra<\/span>mbhut<\/span> was chosen as the <\/span>Principal <\/span>and inherited a school lacking in all basic tenets of an effective education. There were no tables, chairs or textbooks. No extracurricular classes, no library or predictable lighting; facilities that we in the western-world take for granted and almost have an expectation to be provided w<\/span>ith<\/span>in school. <\/span>

Once basic infrastructural needs are met, o<\/span>ur aim here is to introduce English and computing classes as extra-curricular academic activities. Non-academic extracurricular<\/span> activities<\/span> will<\/span>, of course,<\/span> include cricket by renovation of the playing fields, which are currently unsafe and unsanitary. Classrooms will also <\/span>be refurbished and re-equipped with modern facilities in order to inspire and encourage the children to continue onwards t<\/span>o university, as well as maximis<\/span>e<\/span> <\/span>their chances of doing so. <\/span>

This is an exciting time for <\/span>Husti<\/span>, and I cannot stress how grateful we are to all those who have <\/span>taken<\/span> the time to listen to our vision and have actively got involved <\/span>with<\/span> <\/span>generous donations and voluntary work; in particular, NHSF QMUL, KCL and Kent.<\/span>
