From artisans who put in all of their hard work and sleepless nights into making the murtis of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mah\u0101ganapati<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to his beloved bhakts who cherish his arrival for 10 days, this festival is celebrated by all.. Dating back to as early as the 16<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> century, \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ganeshotsav\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ganesh Chathurthi\u2019 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was first known to have been observed in Pune during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji. The legend is that it was initially started by the Peshwas originating from the Konkan region of Maharashtra and the tradition stayed on. It had lost its glamour of large gatherings under the British Raj, and was revived by revolutionary freedom fighter Lokmanya Tilak in 1885 against the British ban on public celebrations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ekadant\u0101ya vakratund\u0101ya gauri tan\u0101ya dh\u012bmahi, gajeshan\u0101ya bhalchandraya shr\u012b ganesh\u0101ya dh\u012bmahi.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The story in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shiva Pur\u0101na<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that once, P\u0101rvati M\u0101 took turmeric paste (for bathing) from her body, made a form of a boy and breathed life into him. He was instructed by her to guard the door while she was taking a bath. The boy even refused Shiva Bhagav\u0101n, the husband of P\u0101rvati M\u0101 who represents the destruction of adharma, entry, obeying his mother\u2019s orders, but was beheaded by Shiva\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trishul<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Enraged on hearing this, P\u0101rvati M\u0101 demanded that Ganesh be brought back to life and he be worshipped before all. Ganesh was given the head of an elephant and hence, got the name \u2018<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gaj\u0101nana\u2019<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From delicacies like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">modak<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">karanji<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u0101rti <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visarjan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Ganesh Utsav truly is a time when people from all backgrounds come together. These 10 days of devotional celebration are known to be very auspicious in the Hindu calendar, celebrating new beginnings, and revering Shr\u012b Ganesh, the remover of obstacles.
