They covered all aspects of the broader tradition of <em>yog<\/em>, which in Sanskrit refers to the joining of one\u2019s consciousness to the ultimate consciousness&nbsp;in the universe, from meditation and breathing to&nbsp;yoga in healthcare and as a spiritual practice.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide\" style=\"grid-template-columns:46% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"497\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IDY-2-1024x497.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IDY-2-1024x497.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IDY-2-600x291.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IDY-2-64x31.jpeg 64w, https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IDY-2-300x146.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IDY-2-768x373.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IDY-2-700x340.jpeg 700w, https:\/\/www.nhsf.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/IDY-2.jpeg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:11px\"><strong>NHSF (UK) was invited to deliver a session<\/strong>&nbsp;in the afternoon on the power of yoga,&nbsp;which began with a brief discussion on the&nbsp;philosophy behind yoga. Introducing the concept&nbsp;of a\u015bt\u0101nga yoga, the eightfold path to liberation,&nbsp;it explored how <strong><em>yoga is much more than the physical postures<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;with which we often associate it, and should be seen as the <strong><em>holistic spiritual movemen<\/em><\/strong>t. In particular, the mental benefits provided by each element of a\u015bt\u0101nga yoga enable us as students to overcome the stress&nbsp;and pressure we regularly face today.  The remainder of the&nbsp;session was a yog\u0101sana class <strong>led by our National Committee<\/strong>&nbsp;members, covering a variety of physical postures.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:12px\"><br>NHSF (UK) look forward to being a part of the celebrations in 2020 and hope to see yoga used by students across the country as a means of maintaining good wellbeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:12px\"><em>The meaning of the words <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/P5TrYw0ue-Y\"><em>\u2018yoga\u2019<\/em><\/a><em> and <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/Zi4NzgaJeOU\">\u2018dhy\u0101n\u2019<\/a> have been explained by Acharya Vidyabhaskar ji of the Omkarananda Ashram in Switzerland as part of the <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/playlist?list=PLQRJQafq-NrsmsvpbMepVgifWAbzYRz3s\"><em>Sanskrit Word of the Month<\/em><\/a><em> series<\/em>,<em> a monthly NHSF (UK) feature exploring the etymology and usage of common Sanskrit words.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Yoga: the latest new fad in physical exercises, or an ancient dh\u0101rmic tradition rooted in spirituality and the liberation of our suffering?
